Is it covered
Coverage depends on your benefit arrangement, the prescribed product and its medical use. Some eligible Medicare beneficiaries now have a separate GLP-1 access route. A Dallas address or a prescription alone cannot confirm what will be paid.
Public
Public coverage cannot accurately be described as a single yes or no. The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge currently provides access to certain GLP-1 medications for eligible people enrolled in qualifying Medicare drug coverage. It has specific clinical criteria and operates outside the usual Part D payment process. Check current CMS information with the prescriber; being enrolled in Medicare does not establish Bridge eligibility.
A drug may also have a covered use separate from weight management. Certain patients prescribed Wegovy for cardiovascular risk reduction or Zepbound for obstructive sleep apnea may have a Part D coverage route subject to the applicable rules. The diagnosis and indication must be accurate. A medication's ability to reduce weight does not justify changing the stated reason for prescribing to obtain payment.
Medicaid, employer coverage and individually purchased plans have their own benefit terms; Medicare information does not settle those questions. Verify the exact product, formulation and intended use with the relevant administrator. The insurance authorization guide explains the separate request process. A clinician's recommendation, a listed drug and a completed authorization form are different pieces of information, none of which alone confirms your final bill.
Finding out
Ask specifically about GLP-1 medication for weight management, naming the product if you know it. General questions get general answers.
Whether it is required, and exactly what documentation they want. This is the answer that saves the most time later.
Some plans cover it but with an annual maximum that a year of treatment will exceed. Worth knowing before month eight.
A verbal yes from a call centre is not something you can hold anyone to. Ask for written confirmation.
If not covered
If the proposed treatment is not covered, ask for a clear explanation of the benefit decision before assuming every option has been ruled out. The prescriber can consider other medically appropriate approaches, while the pharmacy can explain the actual weight loss medication price. A manufacturer discount, when available and permitted for your circumstances, is a separate offer with its own conditions. It is not insurance and need not apply to every product or patient. Establish the remaining weight loss program costs too, because paying for a medicine does not purchase all of the care around it.
Self-payment should be a decision made with a realistic ongoing quote, rather than an assumed obligation to buy the first suggested product. A personalized weight loss plan can address what is financially manageable alongside medical needs. Ask which services can continue if the prescription is unaffordable and whether non-surgical weight management without that medicine is appropriate. If you already take it, discuss continuity with the treating clinician before a funding gap interrupts treatment. Neither an insurance refusal nor a discount advertisement determines the safest next clinical step.

Common questions
Why an answer for one person, product or prescribing purpose may not apply to another.
Told me plainly that the public plan would not fund it before I got my hopes up. Then helped me check the workplace plan, which did.
Found out about the cap in month one rather than month nine. Changed how I budgeted the second half of the year.
Not covered at all. We picked the option I could sustain rather than the one with the better trial numbers, and that was the right call.
Asked whether they could write it as a diabetes prescription for coverage. Got a clear no and a proper explanation why.

Next step
Public health insurance will not fund it for weight management, but your private plan might. Three questions to your insurer settle it before you commit to anything.
