GLP-1 medication
Medication names can make a treatment decision confusing. These Dallas guides explain the active ingredients, brand names and prescription formats you may hear about during a weight management visit. Start with semaglutide treatment or tirzepatide injections, then consider the intended use, possible side effects and ongoing costs with a clinician who knows your medical history.
Two molecules
An ingredient name tells you which medicine a product contains. A brand identifies a particular approved product, with its own uses and instructions. Semaglutide is the ingredient in Wegovy for weight management and in Ozempic, which has diabetes-related indications. Wegovy includes injectable and tablet formulations. Sharing an ingredient does not make these products interchangeable or mean that every formulation has the same approved uses.
Tirzepatide works through GIP and GLP-1 receptors and is given by injection. Its brands include Mounjaro for type 2 diabetes and Zepbound, which includes an adult weight-management indication. Both brand and diagnosis matter when discussing a prescription. A clinician should explain why a specific product fits the condition being treated, and whether a proposed use is outside its FDA-approved labeling.
Practical differences also deserve attention. The injections versus tablets guide describes schedules and administration considerations. Ask how the routine would fit your mornings, travel and other medicines. Then check weight loss insurance coverage for the exact product and intended use. A prescription, an insurer's approval and a pharmacy's ability to fill it are separate steps; clarify each before committing to ongoing expenses.
Getting a prescription
BMI, conditions, personal and family history, and everything else you take. Some histories rule a GLP-1 out entirely, and that is decided here.
Semaglutide or tirzepatide, injectable or tablet. Availability and your drug plan are part of the decision, not an afterthought.
Every GLP-1 starts low. The starting dose is not a treatment dose, it is there to let your body adjust.
The dose steps up on a schedule, and only if the current step is tolerated. Rushing this is what causes most of the misery people describe.

Questions about treatment goals, access and follow-up when a medication is being considered.
I had the brand names muddled completely. Ten minutes of explanation and I finally understood what I was actually being prescribed and why.
Switched molecules after the first one did not agree with me. That was treated as a normal adjustment rather than a failure.
The tablet suited me better than a weekly injection. The instructions about timing and food were stricter than I expected but they were explained clearly.
They checked what my cardiologist had me on before writing anything. Two things needed spacing out.
